ForthRoots: Providing machinery, equipment and expertise to improve sports turf
ForthRoots provides targeted solutions for problematic areas of sports turf and supports greenkeepers and groundsmen with the machinery, equipment and training to improve problem areas in-house.
ForthRoots products have been developed with sustainable turf management practises in mind and our aim is for greenkeepers to target poor performing areas of turf and improve soil conditions to enable preferential grass species to thrive.

Sports turf soil water management
Our pedestrian trenchers, the FR1 and FR2, provide the ability to perform secondary drainage techniques to aid soil water management – a key element of turf management in the quest for year round play. STRI trials confirm that use of ForthRoots pedestrian trenchers results in consistently firmer and drier surfaces and that our trenchers provide a versatile solution to problematic areas of sports turf.
Their manoeuvrability means FR1 and FR2 pedestrian trenchers complement larger machinery, enabling installation of secondary drainage products. They can easily access areas where larger machinery is not suitable and can trench depths of up to 12” and widths of less than 1” up to to 4.5”, making them ideal for working on the difficult middle area of rootzones, and providing the opportunity to replace poor performing soils with quality backfill materials. And because the ForthRoots trenchers remove spoil there is no ‘heave’ when backfilled, eliminating excessive heavy rolling on already wet turf.

Versatility of FR1 and FR2
The tables below demonstrate the versatility of ForthRoots trenchers showing the trench depths and widths that can be performed by the FR1 and FR2 and the various operations that can be performed – including micro trenching, sand and gravel banding, drainline rejuvenation and installation of pipe and secondary drainage products.
The solution to your sports turf drainage problem
.Do you recognise these common problems on areas of your sports turf? If left untreated, they can impact upon play and lead to use of temporary greens .

Key messages from STRI trial results
Dr. Christian Spring (STRI) says:
"The use of the pedestrian trencher to carry out improvements to localised wet areas resulted in both measurable and visual benefits to the surface and as a result, would provide greenkeepers or groundsmen with a useful tool to optimise soil water management."
