Concaved area of ground and puddling fixed by 7" sand slits
Bathgate Golf Club 10th Green Surround
Issue: Concaved area of ground with a historical drain running through it. After showers of rain, the area puddled up and after some time, the grass quality suffered.
Solution: The FR1 trencher was used to install 7” sand slits over a total area of 39 linear metres. This comprised of thirteen sand slits. The spoil from the trenches was collected onto 6mm recycled plastic boards for ease of removal by the green staff. We used a medium coarse, top dressing sand to backfill using the ForthRoots sand hopper. With a few members of staff and a small utility vehicle, this work was carried out within just a few hours.
Results: That night, 11mm of rain fell and the customer confirmed that the area was dry and puddle free the following morning. Head Greenkeeper, Robert Burns, was impressed with the versatility, speed and efficiency of the FR1 and thought it would bring great benefit to over-winter works at Bathgate Golf Club, enabling greens staff to take ownership in resolving issues as they see them arise, eg. Extending existing drains, sand slitting over poorly performing areas.
Dr. Christian Spring (STRI) says:
"All turf with 1” wide sand slits installed, irrespective of whether a sump box was fitted or the surface gradened, had significantly greater water infiltration rates compared to untreated turf."

A Problem We've Solved
Surface run-off onto key areas causing puddling and affecting playability.
Solution: Use ForthRoots FR1 to dig a 3" wide, gravel-filled intercept drain, linked to an outlet to reduce run-off and provide a significantly firmer playing surface.
